Apex was awarded the contract to supply all labour, materials and project management around the installation of infrastructure and machinery to a strict specification set by Toyota.
This included taking delivery of a Komatsu 300 tonne press, Sonoruka coil line and a Taiho robot stacker, worth in excess of $11.5m from the Melbourne docks, and safely transporting, offloading, and installing it in the new centre.
The Apex project management team, consisting of a project manager, project coordinator, project supervisor, OH&S representative and quality assurance representative, worked closely with a team of Japanese engineers and coordinated the mechanical and support trades. These numbered up to six at any one time, and often exceeded 40 people on site working in the close confines of a pit. Due to the tight deadline, the site worked a 6 day, 56 hour week, often extending to a second shift. Apex successfully completed the project in the 12-week allocation to the great satisfaction of Toyota.
